Alcatraz Island

Once a federal prison, Alcatraz Island was also the former site of a lighthouse and a military prison before becoming the island prison home of infamous criminals like Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelley. The prison closed in 1963, but today visitors can tour Alcatraz and get a chilling look at the prison, experience the daily life of inmates and guards, stand in the tiny prison cells and explore what life was like on this isolated island just out of reach of the city of San Francisco.
